A few hours north of Sedona, on the shores of Lake Powell, is the town of Page. With modest accommodations, it is ideally located for those who aspire to explore short, but very, very narrow and deep canyons. Most are short in length, but average only two to four feet wide at shoulder height.
Near Page is the fantastic Paria River Canyon and its enigmatic tributary, the dark and winding Buckskin Gulch. Both of these hikes are serious and require extreme attention to the weather. Rains in the mountains 100 miles to the north can cause deadly walls of water to come crashing down upon unwary hikers basking in 100 degree temperatures.
To the west of Page is Zion National Park, where one can find some of the deepest slot canyons anywhere on earth. Hikers of all fitness levels can explore the Virgin River Narrows. A nice trail winds along the river
